Skype is a simple download for those who don't already have it and it's easy to use. We could maintain a persistent group chat that would always be open to the guild 24/7. Much better than lag chat.
If I had to vote for anything else, I'd choose Xfire. Again, it's quick, easy, and even has a few contests to win now and again. If you play any other games, you should have it. My only concern is group chats aren't as common with Xfire as they are with Skype. It would probably be more geared towards two individuals chatting (which you can also do with Skype).

You can open chat rooms with Xfire, I don't see there any problems. Ido have Skype and MSN too but I never use it. I'll use Xfire, ICQ and TSĀ² most of the time to communicate. I'll never tried Vent and I don't know AIM.

Not everyone has a mic though, and in some cases, like mine, the mic they had broke. Vent's not as fun when everyone can talk except you. And I have to say if you've tried both, Xfire's group chats pale in comparison to Skype's. I know Skype just had an updated version released, so I don't know if it's different from the one you've tried before, czin, but I installed it and got it working within minutes, no questions asked.

Well MSN and AIM are no good because you have to invite everyone at the beginning of the chat, so it would require a restart every time. I know for a fact that you can set-up a stand alone chat server on xfire

I can also confirm that Skype uses persistent chat rooms, as well. You also don't necessarily have to add the people in the guild, so long as they've been invited once to the chat. As long as you don't leave, it will still be there running as an icon on the taskbar, instead of a window like the xfire chat room.

Yes, but the xfire chat room you can leave and join whenever, even so far as re-starting the computer

I know, but with Skype you can even read the chat messages sent while you weren't logged in. The Xfire chat room you have to consciously join in order to see the chat. You can log off Skype, shut down the computer, throw it out a window, and power up a new one using a hamster running on a wheel and you'll still be in the chat room.

While you can't read the old messages (and while sometimes useful, I find myself not doing that if that's availble), its the same with xfire as well. As a bonus for xfire, any other games you play (halo, counterstrike, etc), xfire is an excellent tool for those, that's why I have it in the first place

I don't always read the old messages, but that's mostly due to the fact that there are too many people on this other game and it's not worth reading through their conversations. I also have Xfire because of other games (Call of Duty, in my case), but the appeal of Xfire is that you can still chat while playing a game in full screen. Since Freesky doesn't go full screen, other windows are available, which is why we have the choice of different chat clients.

Yes, but I enjoy chatting and the verbal jousting we get into. It'd be nice to be able to chat while playing halo or Empire at War
